Push Notifications on the Attendee App

Aside from getting push notifications from their computer browser, attendees can also get notified through their mobile device when logged in to the Attendee App. In this article, you'll learn where attendees will see the push notifications depending on what page they're currently accessing on the phone.

If you haven't created push notifications, click here to learn more.

Key Takeaways:

  • Push notifications can only be received if the attendee is logged in to the app and has enabled notifications for the Accelevents app on their device.

  • If attendees are currently on My Events Page or the Landing Page they will not receive the push notification, they must access it in the bell icon inside the event.

  • Regular push notifications without redirects can be received even before the event opens.

  • Clicking a regular push notification from the lock screen or top banner redirects the attendee to the app, but does not open the message, they must click the bell icon to see the full message.

  • Push notifications with redirect modules can only be received when the event is open.

  • Links in the push notification can only be clicked if they are accessing the push notification inside the event.

Best Scenario:

  • The regular push notification without a redirect is received while the attendee is in the event - they can see the full message and links are clickable.

  • The push notification with a redirect module is received while the attendee is not using the app - they will be redirected to the page when clicked, no extra steps needed.

Allow Push Notifications on Your Device

To receive the push notifications on your phone, ensure that notifications are turned on for the Accelevents App on your device.

Ensure your device is not in focus mode, and do not disturb or use lower power mode. You may not receive the push notifications.

Where will push notifications show on mobile?

Location

Scenario

Lock Screen

The attendee is logged in to the app and is on the lock page or is not using their device.

Approximately 140 characters will show on the lock screen.

Top Banner

The attendee is logged in to the app and accessing other areas on the device but not the app itself.

Approximately 70 characters will show on the top banner.

Attendee App

The attendee is accessing the event hub in the app. It will not show while the user is on My Events or the landing page; they must enter and access it from the bell icon.

The push notification does not have a scroller, so for long messages (over 1800 characters), the attendee may not see the OK button at the bottom to close it.

Note: If you have a White Label Attendee App, ensure the Accelevents App is NOT installed on your phone to receive push notifications.

What information will be shown in the push notification before clicking it?

Location

Information

Lock Screen & Top Banner

Accelevents Icon, title, and message

Attendee App

Title and message

Bell Icon

Title, message, and time it was sent. There is a View button if hey haven't opened the push notification.

Note: Custom icons will not show in the app.

Where will regular push notifications redirect when clicked?

If this is a regular message, and there is no redirect module, It will open different areas of the attendee app, depending on where the user clicked it.

Regular Push Notification Without Redirect Module

Lock Screen and Top Banner

If the app is closed, it will redirect to My Events, then the landing page. They will not see the full message instantly. The attendee must click the Enter Event button, then access the push notification message through the bell icon.

If the app is running in the background, it will redirect the attendee to the last page they were viewing in the app. They will not see the full message instantly. They must click the bell icon to see it.

Attendee App

The full message will show if the user is already in the event. Clicking OK will close the notification.

They will not receive the push notification if they are in My Events page or the landing page.

Bell Icon

The notifications list will open, where they can view the title, message, and time it was sent. To see the complete information in a pop-up, click it from the notifications list.

Note: Old push notifications can be accessed from the bell icon.

Push Notifications with Redirect Module

In the push notification settings, you can use the Redirect Module feature to redirect attendee to different areas of the attendee app when they click the push notification. You can have the push notification open a survey, custom tab, session, expo booth, sponsors or people tab.

A push notification with a redirect module can only be received if the event is already open (pre-event access) and if the attendee has already enter the event through the app. If you need to test this you can adjust the pre-event access date and time or create a test event.

Ideally, this kind of push notification should be opened if the attendee is not currently accessing the app, as they won't need to do extra steps to open the page. The redirect behavior will depend on where it's clicked and the last page the attendee accessed in the app.

Push Notification With Redirect Module

Lock Screen and Top Banner

It will open the redirect module page if the last page they visited is the My Events page or any page inside the event.

If the last page they accessed is the landing page, they need to click the Enter Event button first, then it will redirect to the redirect module page.

Attendee App

The full message will show if the user is already in the event. Clicking OK will close the notification.

It will not open the redirect module page. The attendee has to access the push notification from the bell icon to see the "Open tab" option to redirect them to the module.

Bell Icon

The notifications list will open, where they can view the title, message, and time it was sent. To see the complete information in a pop-up, the user can click it from the notifications list. They should see an "Open tab" button to redirect to the module.

In the examples below, the app is running in the background when the attendee clicked the push notification that redirects to a survey.

If the app is closed, the same behavior applies as above, except it will start from the My Events page, pass the landing page, to the event lobby and open the survey (like the first image). They will still need to click the Enter Event button if the last page they visited is the landing page.

Are links clickable in the push notification?

Location

Behavior

Lock Screen & Top Banner

The links are not clickable. When the notification is clicked, it redirects to a page in the app.

Attendee App

The links are clickable and will redirect to the device's browser.

Bell Icon

The links are clickable from the pop-up.
